Mac mini SSD upgrade (Apple-documented facts)

Scope. This page lists only storage and memory facts published in Apple Support tech specs and Apple’s Mac mini memory article. It does not include teardown DIY steps, third-party module guides, or “how we upgraded one.” If you need more capacity after purchase, Apple’s documented path on these pages is to choose storage when configuring the Mac, use external drives, or use Apple / authorised service — not a Lab how-to.

Short answer

Apple publishes SSD capacity as a configure-to-order option on each Mac mini generation’s tech specs. For Apple silicon Mac mini (M1 2020, 2023, 2024/M4 and later listed on the memory article), Apple states that unified memory is integrated into the M-series package and cannot be upgraded after purchase. Apple does not publish a user “install a larger internal SSD” procedure for those models the way it still documents RAM swaps on much older Intel minis (Upgrade or install memory in your Mac mini).

Identify your exact model first: Identify your Mac mini model.

Storage options Apple lists (configure at purchase)

Capacities below are Apple’s listed SSD options / configure-to-order maxima from each generation’s Support tech specs. Apple’s footnotes: 1GB = 1 billion bytes, 1TB = 1 trillion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.

Mac mini (M1, 2020)

From Mac mini (M1, 2020) tech specs:

Apple listing
Default SSD 256GB
Configurable to 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB

Mac mini (2023) — M2 / M2 Pro

From Mac mini (2023) tech specs:

Chip Default SSD Configurable to
Apple M2 256GB 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB
Apple M2 Pro 512GB 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, or 8TB

Mac mini (2024) — M4 / M4 Pro

From Mac mini (2024) tech specs:

Chip Default SSD Configurable to
Apple M4 256GB 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB
Apple M4 Pro 512GB 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, or 8TB

The same 2024 page’s “Configure to Order” section repeats those SSD tiers for apple.com configuration (M4: 512GB / 1TB / 2TB; M4 Pro: 1TB / 2TB / 4TB / 8TB, alongside memory and Ethernet options).

Memory (RAM) — Apple’s upgrade statement

Apple’s memory article groups Mac mini (M1, 2020), Mac mini (2023), Mac mini (2024), and later M-series entries listed there together:

“Memory is integrated into the Apple M-series chip package … and can’t be upgraded. You can configure the memory in your Mac mini when you purchase it.”

(Upgrade or install memory in your Mac mini)

That statement is about unified memory, not about publishing an SSD replacement guide. We quote it because many “Mac mini upgrade” searches conflate RAM and storage; Apple’s documented after-purchase rule for memory on these models is “configure at purchase.”

What Apple does not document here

If you need a larger boot volume than you ordered, options that stay within Apple’s published material are: choose a higher SSD tier when buying, add external storage (USB/Thunderbolt drives — see Apple’s Mac storage docs for your macOS version), or contact Apple / an Apple Authorised Service Provider about service parts.

For moving files onto USB / external drives from Apple devices, Apple documents connectors and formats in the iPhone guides we summarise separately: How to save iPhone photos to a flash drive. On Mac, use the Mac User Guide sections for connecting storage devices for your macOS release (linked from Apple Support).

FAQ

Can I upgrade Mac mini M4 SSD myself according to Apple? Apple’s public tech specs list M4/M4 Pro SSD sizes as configure-to-order options (2024 specs). Apple does not publish a user SSD-install guide for that model on the memory/support pages cited above. This page does not add unofficial steps.

Is Mac mini memory upgradable on M1 / 2023 / 2024? No — Apple says unified memory is integrated into the M-series package and can’t be upgraded; configure it when you buy (Apple).
