How to save iPhone photos to a flash drive
Published: Updated:
This page summarises Apple’s iPhone User Guide only. If Apple’s wording differs, follow Apple. Related: What is a flash drive?.
Short answer
Connect a compatible USB drive (or other external storage) to your iPhone, then export selected photos and videos from the Photos app with Export Unmodified Original, or copy files with the Files app. Apple documents both paths: exporting unmodified originals from Photos to an external drive, and transferring files with an external storage device via Files (Import and export photos and videos; Transfer files to a storage device; Connect external storage devices).
What you need (Apple requirements)
| Requirement | Apple’s wording |
|---|---|
| Connector | Attach the USB drive or reader to the iPhone charging port with a compatible connector or adapter. You may need Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, USB-C to SD Card Camera Reader, or Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader (sold separately) (Connect external storage). |
| Partition / format | Single data partition; formatted as APFS, APFS (encrypted), macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32, or FAT (Connect external storage). |
| Power | External hard drives often need their own power. On USB-C iPhones you can use a powered USB hub; on Lightning you can use the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter with a USB power adapter (Connect external storage). Flash drives that draw power from the port usually do not need a hub — Apple’s note is aimed at hard drives. |
On USB-C iPhones, Apple also lets you erase and reformat a connected drive to APFS, ExFAT, or MS-DOS (FAT) in Files (Transfer files). Erasing deletes everything on that drive.
Method A — Export from Photos (unmodified originals)
Apple’s steps (Import and export photos and videos):
- Connect the storage device to the iPhone (Lightning or USB-C connector, or direct connection).
- Open the Photos app.
- Select the photos and videos to export.
- Tap the share control, then tap Export Unmodified Original.
- Tap the storage device under Locations, then tap Save.
Apple notes that for edited items, the unmodified original is what gets exported. Items in a locked Hidden album are not transferred until you unlock Hidden (Settings → Apps → Photos — turn off Use Face ID / Touch ID / Passcode for that album) (same Apple guide).
Method B — Copy with the Files app
Apple’s generic external-storage transfer (Transfer files):
- Connect the iPhone to a USB drive or SD card (adapter if needed — see Connect external storage).
- In a supported app such as Files, copy the files onto the storage device.
- Disconnect the device, then connect it to the Mac or PC where you want the copies.
To confirm the drive appears: in Files, tap Browse, then tap the device name under Locations. If Locations is missing, tap Browse again (Connect external storage).
Disconnect
Apple’s disconnect step for a USB drive or card reader is to remove it from the charging port (Connect external storage). For Files-based copies, finish the copy before removing the drive (Transfer files).
FAQ
Does any flash drive work? Only if it meets Apple’s single-partition and format list above. Reformat on a Mac/PC or (on USB-C iPhones) via Files Erase if needed — Erase wipes the drive (Connect external storage; Transfer files).
Lightning vs USB-C? Both are covered by Apple’s guides. Older Lightning iPhones typically need Apple’s camera/USB adapters; USB-C models can often attach a matching USB-C drive directly (Connect external storage).
Photos vs Files? Use Photos → Export Unmodified Original when you want Apple’s photo/video export path. Use Files when you are copying arbitrary files onto the drive (Apple guides linked above).
